The London Design Festival is a key constituent of London’s Autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival. Established in 2003, its role is to celebrate and promote London as the world’s design capital and gateway to the international design community.
The Festival attracts a wide and dedicated audience from a variety of countries and this year proudly presents 84 displays, talks and workshops at Festival’s central hub at the V&A, while the five Design Districts (including Brompton Design District, Shoreditch Design Triangle, Fitzrovia Now and new Chelsea Design Quarter, Clerkenwell Design Quarter) host over 100 events.
From 13-21 September, the Victoria and Albert Museum / V&A hosts exciting, experimental and immersive projects. Martin Roth, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum sais: “Each year, the V&A’s galleries are transformed by the thrilling installations and interventions created as part of the London Design Festival. The Museum is the Festival hub for the sixth time in 2014 and we look forward to hosting
it for the 60th and beyond! In this intensive, inspiring period, the best of contemporary design comes ‘into conversation’ with the Museum’s outstanding historic collections – and always produces exciting new ideas.”
One of the highlights this year is „The Wish List“: Sir Terence Conran and the London Design Festival have invited 10 design legends to work with 10 emerging talents who have been asked to design and make something for their mentors that they have always wanted but had never been able to find.
Such an open brief guarantees an extraordinary spread of design but the challenge was to produce each project in a single material – American hardwood. This project celebrates the versatility of timber and the enormous variety that can be achieved with one material. The project is a collaborative fusion of design experience, young talent and
craftsmanship. „The Wish List“ pairs up established designers including John Pawson, Amanda Levete, Zaha Hadid and Gareth Neal with young designers they admire. The design teams developed their ideas together and the pieces were crafted and produced at the Benchmark studio and factory in Kintbury, West Berkshire.
