MATTHEW BARNEY’S RIVER OF FUNDAMENT AT MOCA L.A.

American artist Mattew Barney, best known for his giant filmic undertakings like „River of Fundament“ and „The Cremaster“, is now on stage at MOCA Los Angeles. The museum takes refernce to „River of Fundament“ – a production that had been nearly 7 years in the making – and has put together a truly impressive presentation.

On show are 14 large-scale sculptures weighing up to 25 tons accompgnied by photographs, film stills and drawings that are either taken from the film or refer to it including very recent work made since the film’s premiere exemplifying Barney’s continued exploration of his themes. Among the very recent suites of work that are presented are Barney’s „Water Castings“, a group of sculptures now on view for the first time.

The show serves also as a physical manifestations and remnants of the ideas and performances throughout the titular symohonic film collaboration with composer Jonathan Bepler. „River of Fundament“was written by Barney in very close cooperation with Bepler telling a story of regeneration and rebirth of epic length and operatic style. It is a dazzling merger of history and contemplation on existential human drives like sex, power and violence that have continuously propelled civilizations.

Much discussed and garnering attention was the fact that the artists themes have been mainly influenced by Norman Mailer’s epic novel „Ancient Evenings“ drawing its fantastical imagery from a wide range of sources reaching from Mailer’s own life and oeuvre, his sometimes provocative statements to mythology and contemplation and on to the rise and fall of American industry.
