SALT & SILVER _ SECRETS OF EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY

This is the first exhibition in Britain devoted to salted paper prints, one of the earliest forms of photograpy. A uniquely British invention, unveiled by William HenryFox Talbot in 1839, salt prints spread across the globe, creating a new visual language of the modern moment. This revolutionary technique transformed subjects from still lifes, portraits, landscapes and scenes of daily life into images with their own specific aesthetic: a soft, luxurious effect particular to this photographic process.

In dipping writing paper first in a solution of common salt, then partly drying it, coating it with silver nitrate, then drying it again, before applying further coats silver nitrate, William Henry Fox Talbot pioneered what became known as the salt print . The specifically soft and luxurious aesthetic soon became an icon of modern visual language.

This show is as much relevant to enthusiasts of early photography as it is revealing for all those who want to have a close-up and authentic look on the world of  mid-nineteenth century Britain – with a romantic touch of shades of grey and silver. Iconic photographers of the Victorian era such as Roger Fenton and William Henry Fox documented emblems of modernity and  studies of Greek sculpture which illustrate the Victorians’ art historical obsession with the Ancient world.

Such prints were, however, extremely fragile and few survive, which explains why this is the first exhibition devoted to the medium in the UK. Organised in collaboration with the film producer and Art Fund trustee Michael Wilson’s Wilson Centre for Photography, the exhibition brings together a rare collection of some of the finest still lifes, landscapes and portraits produced using this method.
