Refuge and hideaway, childhood nostalgia and adventures into the wild: treehouses invoke strong imagination, emotions and the vision of a life in symbiosis with nature.
Author Philip Jodidio has chronicled the history and different styles of treehouses around the globe choosing 50 outstanding examples, some designed by architects, others the work of unknown craftsmen, some of them teahouses, some restaurants, hotels of playhouses for children.
Publisher Taschen Books has just released the e-book version of „Tree Housese, Fairy Tale Castles in the Air“. And they truely did a great job in terms of layout, user friendlyness, interactive features and all those details that are essential for a rewarding e-book reading experience. It is available via Apple’s ibooks store.
The book is a visual beauty both regarding illustrations and images. It shows that treehouses can indeed take any form imagination has to offer and is especially nowadays conceived as a resistance or escape from everyday convention, routine and sensual overstimulation. The houses express the need to restore contact with nature, to take time and contemplate life and to get back to a simpler life focusing on essential needs.
From an architectural point of view treehouses are very interesting as they are extremely versatile buildings: the constructions combine size and function in often very different ways creating spaces of a broad range of usage. Also when it comes to materials you’ll find everything from recycled and eco-sustainable to cutting-edge and innovative. Given certain restraints in dimensions, treehouses are typically multipurpose spaces – however very special ones: they’re actually quite small but still convey a feeling of freedom as they open up directly onto the landscape; they’re solid, heavy houses but still make you feel light and airy floating above ground.
Not surprisingly there is a special relationship of the interior and exterior, the way steps and terraces set distances from the ground and the way windows frame impressions directly taken from the surrounding nature that is on the other hand also part of the house itself. Treehouses are certainly a very special experience of living taking us on a journey away from everyday urban routine towards a realm of dreams and longings.
